Chivas in the Park. I know what you’re thinking – that’s illegal. But we’re talking about the other Chivas, namely the Carson-based professional soccer team Chivas USA! On Saturday, May 14 at Mar Vista Park, the City of L.A.’s Parks and Recreation department is sponsoring three soccer clinics for ages 5-15 put on by the coaches of Chivas USA. Clinic times are 9:00 am, 10:45 am, and 12:30 pm. The $5 registration fee gets your child (i) a 90 minute soccer clinic, (ii) a free t-shirt, and (iii) 2 ticket vouchers to a Chivas USA home game. This is a chance for your child to train with the professionals. Don’t miss it.

Open House at Your Firestation. The second Saturday of May is designated "Fire Service Recognition Day" in Los Angeles. On this day, members of your Los Angeles Fire Department host an Open House at every Neighborhood Fire Station to warmly welcome visitors of all ages. On Saturday, May 14, 2011 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 M, Neighborhood Fire Stations throughout the City of Los Angeles will be expecting your visit. Calling all Picasos. The Spring 2011 Open Studios at Grand View Fine Art Studios (GVFAS) will be held from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 21, 2011 at 3871 Grand View Boulevard, 90066. Grand View Fine Art Studios (GVFAS) is a complex of 27 artist studios in Mar Vista, 1-1/2 blocks south of Venice Boulevard. Its 8,000 square-feet located in central Mar Vista since the late 1990s houses private and shared work space for visual artists. GVFAS artists work in a variety of media and styles, reflecting the many influences that express the diversity that characterizes the unique creative spirit of the City of Los Angeles. Come meet the artists in their studios and see works of many media, styles and influences. Free admission and plentiful parking in front and rear of building. The City wants your old tires. Seriously. On May 14 and 21, the City of Los Angeles, through its Department of Public Works, Bureau of Sanitation Division, will hold its two of its SIX free Tire Recycling Collection Events. On May 14, LA City residents (bring proof of residency) may deposit their old tires at the East Valley District Yard located at 11050 Pendleton Street, Sun Valley, 91352 from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm. On May 21, the drop off locating will be the West Valley District Yard at 8840 Vanalden Avenue, Northridge, 91324. Sorry, no tires from businesses, please, only individual residents. Those participating will receive a coupon for 15% off future tire purchases.

The End Is May Be Coming. The “Marina/Venice Be Ready Expo” will take place on May 21 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at Burton W. Chace Park community center in Marina del Rey (13650 Mindanao Way, Marina del Rey, California 90292). The event is co‐hosted by organizers from the Villa Marina and Venice communities, and will be free to the public. The main theme of the Expo is to educate people in the community on how to be better prepared for a disaster or emergency. This Expo will be a great way for emergency response and disaster preparedness agencies, organizations, and companies to connect with members of the local community, and to provide them with valuable information about how to take care of themselves, their families, and their pets during an emergency or disaster. Admission is free and Councilman Bill Rosendahl will be on hand.

This year the Mar Vista Green Garden Showcase expands to include tours within the tour to address even more aspects of sustainability. We will showcase drought resistant landscaping, edible gardens, composting techniques, water capture and even chickens!

Following last year's successful summit, the MVCC Education, Arts and Culture Committee is proud to once more bring together parents, teachers, students, elected officials and the community as a whole at the 2011 Education Summit to help improve our community's access to quality education for our kids.

The summit will feature two parts. First, Mar Vista area schools will be invited to showcase their schools, giving parents an opportunity to meet with school representatives under one roof. Second, a diverse panel of speakers including Steve Zimmer, LAUSD Board of Education member for District 4, will discuss education reform opportunities and challenges, and how parents and the community can get involved.

THE BEETHOVEN BUZZ FOR THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 1, 2010 BREAKING NEWS... IT IS MOVIE NIGHT THIS FRIDAY NIGHT! Mark your calendars for an evening at the movies this FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 5. The concession stand opens at 5:30PM with the showing of "Chavo Del Ocho" (similar to the Little Rascals played by adults in Spanish) and the big screening of "Cloudy Wth A Chance of Meatballs" at 6:15PM. Tickets are $3.00 each or a family pack of four for $10.00. Tickets will be on sale after school this Thursday and Friday and at the door. Pizza, salad, drinks and all sorts of goodies will be for sale. We are in need of donations of beverages (waters/juice), individual chips/crackers/cookies and sweets. Please label your donation "Movie Night" and drop off at the office on Wed-Fri this week. We need helpers the night of the movie starting at 5:00PM for ticket collectors, concession stand workers, and clean up. AFTERSCHOOL INTERVENTION Afterschool intervention in various subjects begins on TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 9 and continues on Tuesdays through MAY 4 from 1:45-2:45PM. Please contact your child's treacher if you have interest in learning more about the program. NO PARKING IN THE TEACHER'S LOT There is no parent parking in the teacher's parking lot. That lot is reserved for teachers and limited in space. Parents, please park on local streets and do not use the lot. NO PARKING IN BUS LANE Please do not park in the areas designated for Bus Parking. If you continue to park in that area on Victoria Ave, you may receive a citation. Thank you for your assistance by parking elsewhere to drop off your child/ren. WE LOVE BEETHOVEN CHILDREN SO PLEASE DO ALL OF US A FAVOR A reminder not to drive and use your cell phone or text while driving. Keep your children's safety in mind. If you or your child are riding bikes or have your child on your bike, please ensure that that your child is wearing a helmet. There have been near misses and some of us have witnessed unfortunate and preventable situation if drivers focused on driving. The children of Beethoven thank ever driver and bike rider who make this a priority.

SOCCER! Pay-as-you-go soccer for all ages started last week. Classes are at 1:45PM on Tuesdays. The cost is $12 per session and money will be collected at the field. You can also pay for the series of six classes.

GYMNASTICS ANYONE? Broadway Gymnastic School (BGS) has pulled together a program at a special rate for Beethoven students (not affiliated with Beethoven school.) The program will begin on WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 3 and it provides transportation from Beethoven to the gym. BGS will pick up from Beethoven at 2:30PM and will take them to the gym. Parents can either pick up your child from the gym or BGS will return students to Beethoven. There will be 9 week sessions. Regular price is $304, our rate is $265. Regular yearly registration is $50 (Your child will get gym T-shirt when you sign) and this special rate is $40. If you already paid registration for the year you will not need to pay again! 5th GRADE CANDY AND BALLOON GRAMS The 5th grade will be selling Valentine's Day themed grams and delivery will be on FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 12. RECYCLING Drop off your aluminum cans and plastic bottles (#1 and #2) in the big bin in front of Room 28. We do not have drop off containers in the main buildings because of ants. If there are classroom collection containers, those are encouraged to be dumped into the bins by Room 28. The school needs the proceeds so parents, please do not empty the containers for personal recycling as families are donating to support the school.

New MVCC Web Site Launching Soon

The MVCC is very pleased to announce that the new official website will be launched to our stakeholders and the public this coming week. Once this launch is activated, the official MVCC domain name for its website, www.marvista.org, will automatically take the public to the new site. As part of this launch, current email lists from our existing Email Notification System will be moved over to the new site. Once that has taken place, an email will be sent out to those on these lists asking them to go to the new site and register as a user of the new ENS system.

MVCC Board of Director Elections

The City of Los Angeles Elections Division, in conjunction with the Mar Vista Community Council, will hold elections for all 13 seats on the MVCC Board of Directors on Sunday, April 11, 2010 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. The Candidate Filing Period will commence on Monday January 11, 2010 and close on Wednesday, February 10, 2010. Vendors galore! Plan to do your holiday shopping this SATURDAY, NOV 21 from 10:00AM-3:00PM at Beethoven's Holiday Boutique. There will be lots of vendors and food, plus our school gets a portion of proceeds. Lots of great items and plenty for the kids, too!

Bring your friends and stroll the Boutique! We also need help! We are asking an hour of time per family and room parents have signup sheets for each classroom. If you cannot make it on Saturday, please donate waters, chips, sodas, or items for sale at the food booth. Label them “Holiday” Boutique” and drop them off in your classroom and there will be a classroom collection on Friday afternoon. This is a great opportunity to spend time with friends, shop and enjoy the day! BREAKING NEWS... BEAR SCARE is this SATURDAY, OCT 31 from 10:00AM-3:00PM.

This is a fun event for Beethoven families and the community. No entrance fee! We are asking that every family give an hour of their time per child so all families can enjoy the day without working the full day. Stop by at the sign-in booth if you have not already signed up. We can use set-up help starting at 8:00AM and clean up as late as 3:00-4:00PM. If you are unable to attend, a donation of water and beverages is appreciated and those can be labeled "Bear Scare" and brought to the classroom or Parents Center before or after school tomorrow. Dads, please help with the haunted house as building begins FRI OCT 30 at 6:00PM in the hallway near the Library!

MILESTONE FOR CLIMATE ACTION

Saturday was International Day of Climate Action and Sunday was a milestone for climate action in Mar Vista!

The Mar Vista Green Committee unanimously approved a motion to make Mar Vista the first clean electricity neighborhood in Los Angeles, with a goal of 100% clean electricity by 2018. The motion must be approved by the Mar Vista Community Council (MVCC) in two weeks, on November 10, and you can help! Please sign the petition - http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/gosolarmarvista/ - that will be presented to the MVCC, urging Mar Vista to make the switch to solar.

With Million Solar Roofs funding, solar electricity is now cheaper than coal-powered electricity for many homeowners with solar-friendly rooftops. Next year the LADWP will introduce "virtual net metering" along with other ways for businesses and residents in apartments and condos to go solar too! And with community support, Mar Vista can be a leader in installing solar panels on our schools, library and post office.
