Chivas in the Park. I know what you’re thinking – that’s illegal. But we’re talking about the other Chivas, namely the Carson-based professional soccer team Chivas USA! On Saturday, May 14 at Mar Vista Park, the City of L.A.’s Parks and Recreation department is sponsoring three soccer clinics for ages 5-15 put on by the coaches of Chivas USA. Clinic times are 9:00 am, 10:45 am, and 12:30 pm. The $5 registration fee gets your child (i) a 90 minute soccer clinic, (ii) a free t-shirt, and (iii) 2 ticket vouchers to a Chivas USA home game. This is a chance for your child to train with the professionals. Don’t miss it.
Open House at Your Firestation. The second Saturday of May is designated "Fire Service Recognition Day" in Los Angeles. On this day, members of your Los Angeles Fire Department host an Open House at every Neighborhood Fire Station to warmly welcome visitors of all ages. On Saturday, May 14, 2011 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 M, Neighborhood Fire Stations throughout the City of Los Angeles will be expecting your visit. We look forward to meeting you and your family at any City of Los Angeles Fire Station during our Annual Open House Celebration. Please don't forget your camera! St. John's Presbyterian Church/American Red Cross Community Blood Drive: Sunday, May 15, 11am-5pm at 11000 National Blvd. (at Military Ave.), Los Angeles, CA 90064. Child care available and pizza and homemade cookies will be provided. Calling all Picasos. The Spring 2011 Open Studios at Grand View Fine Art Studios (GVFAS) will be held from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 21, 2011 at 3871 Grand View Boulevard, 90066. Grand View Fine Art Studios (GVFAS) is a complex of 27 artist studios in Mar Vista, 1-1/2 blocks south of Venice Boulevard. Its 8,000 square-feet located in central Mar Vista since the late 1990s houses private and shared work space for visual artists. GVFAS artists work in a variety of media and styles, reflecting the many influences that express the diversity that characterizes the unique creative spirit of the City of Los Angeles. Come meet the artists in their studios and see works of many media, styles and influences. Free admission and plentiful parking in front and rear of building. The City wants your old tires. Seriously. On May 14 and 21, the City of Los Angeles, through its Department of Public Works, Bureau of Sanitation Division, will hold its two of its SIX free Tire Recycling Collection Events. On May 14, LA City residents (bring proof of residency) may deposit their old tires at the East Valley District Yard located at 11050 Pendleton Street, Sun Valley, 91352 from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm. On May 21, the drop off locating will be the West Valley District Yard at 8840 Vanalden Avenue, Northridge, 91324. Sorry, no tires from businesses, please, only individual residents. Those participating will receive a coupon for 15% off future tire purchases.
The End Is May Be Coming. The “Marina/Venice Be Ready Expo” will take place on May 21 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at Burton W. Chace Park community center in Marina del Rey (13650 Mindanao Way, Marina del Rey, California 90292). The event is co‐hosted by organizers from the Villa Marina and Venice communities, and will be free to the public. The main theme of the Expo is to educate people in the community on how to be better prepared for a disaster or emergency. This Expo will be a great way for emergency response and disaster preparedness agencies, organizations, and companies to connect with members of the local community, and to provide them with valuable information about how to take care of themselves, their families, and their pets during an emergency or disaster. Admission is free and Councilman Bill Rosendahl will be on hand.
